Back from holidays

OK so we are home from our two weeks away.  What can I say, glad to be back but the break was not long enough to do all we wanted.  Photos and posts will be forthcoming over the next week.

For all the people we did not get to see (MW) sorry for our lack of planning and schedule.  For those we did it was great.

MRI Results

Ok so the doctor gave me the results of my MRI today.  All is ok, the spot in my brain is old and inactive.  Probably from an old fever or a birth “mark” I’ve had all along.

Now as for my headaches, looks like the drugs are working fine and that I will be on them for a few months.  At that point they will try and wean me off them and everything should be ok.

Missing In Action

As some of you might have noticed not much has been going on with this website or my photos on Flickr.  Well unfortunately that is because I have been and still am quite sick at the moment.  I will include a few details here just so everyone is up to date.

I have been suffering continual headaches since the beginning of February at least.  I saw the doctor in Mid Feb and also saw my Optomotrist and and Eye doctor as we originally thought it might have been related to my “bung” left eye that I have had since I was a teenager.  However all that came up clear, no inflammation, infection or pressure in the eye itself.

My headaches continued daily and I visited my doctor again.  He then thought I may have had a Chronic severe sinus infection.  Ten days of strong antibiotics (with all the wonderful side effects) did nothing for the pain in my head.  So on Tuesday the 24th of April my doctor got me to get a CT scan of my brain.

On the 27th I got my results and a little bit of a surprise.  I have a 5mm “dense” area in my right frontal lobe, now this spot could be anything.  It could be a hemorrhage, it could be a tumor, very old scar tissue or just a natural spot I have had since birth.  Since I have no older scans there is no way to tell.  I was then sent to hospital to see if there was a urgent need for a more detailed scan and an evaluation of whether this spot was causing my headaches.  The doctors at the hospital did not believe the spot is causing my current problems (and I agree with them, it is most likely and old scar from a childhood incident when I ran full tilt into a metal pole).

On Wednesday the 2nd of May I saw a neurologist about the spot and my headaches.  He concurs that the spot is not the cause of the headaches but did schedule a detailed scan to confirm exactly what it is.  In relation to my headaches he believes I am suffering from a episode of Chronic sustained migraine.  I have suffered from migraines in the past and understand the impact they have on me.  These headaches although not as severe as a short intense migraine, they have all the same symptoms:

  • Unable to concentrate
  • Irritable
  • Speech difficulties
  • Sound sensitivity

Now remember I have been having this issues for 3 months now and I am seriously worn out and very concerned.  I know Dani is worried about me and is finding it very hard.  I love her so much and hate to see her so affected.

So the neurologist now has me on anticonvulsants and blood pressure tablets to attack the migraine from two angles.  The anticonvulsants should stop the brain signals starting the migraine and the blood pressure tablets should expand the blood vessels in the brain and ease the pain and the feedback loop.

I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Simple Update

Just updated my site to the latest version of WordPress. Should be a simple task, ftp the new files save a couple of configs and presto all done.

Except I could not get ftp to work properly to my server… took me 3 hours, 4 programs, a lot of frustration before I used the site restore functionality to get the new files up.

Over the next week I will be updating the theme with one of my own.

Lighting

Ok before you read my rant below I recommend you all read the following article entitled How Many Lightbulbs Does it Take to Change the World?

Right so you have read the article?

You all understand why we should move away from Incandescent bulbs?

So how many compact fluorescent lights (CFL) do you have in your house?
We currently have 6 in our house and they are in the high use areas.

How many more could we install?
We have 8 more standard bulbs that could be replaced and 5 that cannot due to the fact that dimmers are installed on those lights.

Currently the Australian government is proposing that they mandate that all bulbs sold from 2009 onwards meet lower wattage usage standards. This would effectively make it impossible to buy and incandescent bulb and I for one am in favour of this. However note that would mean that I have 5 globes that I could not replace without hiring an electrician to removing the dimmer switches. Also globes in some appliances (ovens, fridges, sewing machines) would have to be exempt as there is not alternative bulbs for these situations. The government mandate may force manufacturers to provide solutions for these appliances and that can only be a good thing.

One lighting solution that is not getting much attention is the low voltage spot lighting that is currently popular in Australian homes for the kitchen and dining areas. People believe that since they are low voltage they must be low power users. This is absolutely WRONG. These lights are normally 12-24volt halogen globes that produce a huge amount of waste heat and are often worse than standard old incandescent globes. Additionally the transformer to drop the 240volts AC to 12-24volts DC also produces waste heat then therefore uses additional electricity. So what is the solution for these lights, well there is two, small CFL or LED based down lights. The CFL solution requires the removal of the transformer and replacement of the fittings back to 240volts and therefore is an expensive changeover cost. However this could be recovered within 2-3 years in electricity and bulb replacement costs. LED lights can directly replace the Halogens without the removal of the transformer. However the light is not as bright or concentrated.

You don’t have to change every bulb at one time next time a bulb blows in your house go to the shop, look of the CFL that will fit, buy it and try it out. Remember to look at the wattage and the colour temperature (warm, natural, or cool) and pick the best one for the room you are planning to use it in.

Crazy World ?!

Australia is in the beginnings of a Federal Election year.  This means that every night we have to sit through politicians arguing over every thing from the economy, water, coal, nuclear power, education, industrial relations and taxes.

The party currently in power, the Liberals, have just found out that Australians care about the environment.  For years this government has refused to do anything related to global warming, CO2 levels or water consumption and provision.  Now they want to take over control of the Murray-Darling river system (the largest in Australia, like the Mississippi for the USA)  from the individual states.  They want to legislate to basically ban the old incandescent light bulb.  But the big one is to develop approx 25 nuclear reactors to provide electricity in the future.  However they don’t want to sign onto Kyoto and any international carbon trading that has already started, but they are considering an Australian only carbon trading system.

OK so now you have the background, over the next few weeks I will be talking about the following environmental issues and solutions:

  • Lighting
  • Transport especially cars
  • Electricity Generation
  • Housing and Urban design
  • Carbon trading and taxing

I hope that you stick around while I do some research and articulate my ideas and maybe we can discuss other options and opinions.

Quick updates

Ok the new year has snuck up on me and caught me totally unaware.

Some of the things that have already happened this year:

  • Changed the car over due to the old lease running out – now have a new Peugeot 307 Wagon (Diesel)
  • Was made a job offer from outside my current company
  • Had the rent increased by the landlord
  • Was off for three days sick last week
  • Dani has started a new job
  • Kids have started school again

Things in Australia are getting crazy with the Federal Election coming up later this year and all the money and promises being put forward by our politicians.   Apparently we need to build 23 nuclear reactors, to stop the production of CO2, of course that is if we want to wait 10 years for them to be designed and approved then 20 years to build and commission.  That will fix things in time I am sure, yea right!

Ok I will be posting more frequently and posting more rants.

?!

Has the world gone crazy? or is it just me?

Last few months

Ok I have been slack again.  For all you people that read my blog to figure out what I am doing (all 2 of you), I am sorry.

I will spend the next day or so going through my photos etc and will have some new posts up in a day or so.

Splinter – Not a Vampire!

Apparently I do have a life during daylight hours. My family is seeing me before sunset for the first time in over 3 months. This has nothing to do with the longer days coming into summer and everything to do with the fact I am now working sensible hours.  The last two months of my old role had me working 65 hours a week on average.

I have now started my new role within the company and I am getting home at a reasonable time each evening and not working weekends.

With all this new free time I should be updating this Blog more often and taking and uploading more photos.  Sorry this site has been a little dull lately.

Working Hard

As you may have noticed I have been very slack with updating my blog and photos.  This is due to the fact I have been working 60 – 70 hours a week for the last two months.

Things should be back to normal in a week or so.

Another year!

Well I have survived another year on this planet! With one year left before I hit the magic 40 I am happy with my life, family and future. We have all fitted into Canberra quiet well Dani is getting a good amount of casual work, the kids are doing well at school with my girl getting awards for her English and Science and by little boy working and playing hard. Down here I have had more opportunities and job offers I have ever had in my life, it is so good to be wanted.

Besides the extra grey hair I got some great stuff this year. A new tire for my scooter (I have worn the old one out with over 13000km’s), a new razor (I think I got this because my wife is tired of me using hers), a cool Mag Warrior and the movie Serenity as a special boxed edition.

I am currently going through a detailed security check by the Australian government so that I can work on my government accounts and opportunities. So I must say a big thank you to my friends that have acted as referee’s for me.

Upcoming Ride

I have decided to join the Snowy Ride this year. Before you all say, yes I know I have a scooter, yes I know I will have to ride it up the biggest mountains in Australia.

However I am sure me and my Honda Forza will be able to handle it well. I will update date you with my preparations as the ride gets closer.

End of a dream run

Ok so the Australian team have been knocked out of the world cup by Italy.  What can I say, many of us think we were robbed.

We do have to remember however this is our first world cup 2nd round and we did really well.

Congratulations to the team you did us proud.
